The Senegalese Minister of Armed Forces, General Birame Diop, representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a powerful message at the opening of the second edition of Senegal Space Week. Addressing a gathering of international experts and partners, he emphasized that modern security challenges extend beyond terrestrial borders—into the domain of space, data, and emerging technologies.
According to the General, harnessing space technology will empower Senegal to enhance territorial surveillance and strengthen its defenses against pressing threats such as terrorism, maritime piracy, and cross-border crime. He highlighted how satellite imagery, advanced mapping, and geointelligence tools can equip defense and security forces with critical insights for smarter decision-making and proactive risk mitigation.
During the event, multiple partnership agreements were signed to bolster Senegal’s international collaboration in space exploration and satellite technology. The Minister also underscored the urgent need to empower the nation’s youth through education and training in space science, digital innovation, and cutting-edge technologies.
He stressed that investing in research, infrastructure, and skill development is essential for Senegal to emerge as a leading African player in the global space sector. The opening ceremony concluded with a tribute to General Mansour Seck, a pioneering figure in Senegalese aviation history.
