In a bold declaration reinforcing the government’s position, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again underscored the necessity of reinforcing laws pertaining to homosexuality in Senegal. Emphasizing the importance of strict enforcement, he framed the issue as a matter of national sovereignty, rejecting external pressures while defending the country’s legal framework.

uncompromising legal enforcement
Speaking to the media, Ousmane Sonko made it clear that the government’s approach to enforcing laws on homosexuality is unwavering. He stated that no individual, regardless of status, would be exempt from legal consequences, declaring: « No one will be spared, especially not those who pose the greatest threat. Laws are not selective—they apply to all, without exception. »
The Prime Minister went further to address historical inaction, asserting that past administrations failed to address the issue with the urgency it required. « This is not a recent phenomenon, he argued. Previous governments turned a blind eye, allowing the situation to escalate unchecked. Our administration will not repeat those mistakes. »
rejection of foreign interference
In his remarks, Ousmane Sonko took a firm stance against international criticism, particularly from Western nations. He dismissed concerns raised by foreign partners, stating that Senegal’s legal stance enjoys overwhelming domestic support. « The only voices of opposition come from abroad— he said, « specifically from certain Western capitals. We owe no explanations to those who seek to undermine our sovereignty. »
He also cautioned against the influence of external intellectuals attempting to sway local legislative processes, rejecting any possibility of a legislative moratorium. « No delays will be tolerated, he affirmed. « The laws will pass, and they will be enforced without compromise. »
