Senegal government stands firm on strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws

The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has once again underscored the government’s resolve to enforce stricter legislation targeting homosexuality, signaling a firm stance against external pressures. Addressing a sensitive national debate, he emphasized the necessity of upholding the country’s legal sovereignty while dismissing concerns raised by international observers.

Stricter enforcement with no exemptions

In a bold declaration, Ousmane Sonko reiterated that the government will not tolerate any exceptions under the proposed legal amendments. He framed the issue as a matter of national policy, stating: “No individual, regardless of status or influence, will be shielded from these laws. Their enforcement will be absolute and uniform.”

The Prime Minister drew a clear line between the current administration’s approach and that of previous governments. He argued that the escalation of the issue was a direct consequence of past inaction, asserting: “This is not a sudden problem—it has roots in years of insufficient measures. Had earlier administrations acted decisively, we would not be facing this challenge today.”

Rejection of foreign interference

Sonko’s remarks also served as a pointed rebuttal to international criticism, particularly from Western nations. He dismissed external concerns as unwarranted interference, declaring: “The only voices opposing these laws come from outside our borders—namely, certain Western capitals. We owe no explanations to them.”

He further warned against any attempts to derail the legislative process, adding: “Efforts by certain African intellectuals to stall these reforms will fail. There will be no delays or moratoriums—justice will proceed without compromise.”
