MODERNISATION DES MARCHÉS : OUSMANE SONKO ANNONCE UN VASTE PROGRAMME DE RESTRUCTURATION

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating condition of Senegal’s markets. He highlighted the advanced state of disrepair affecting numerous commercial infrastructures, many of which were originally constructed in the 1970s.
During his address, the head of government underscored the significant safety hazards prevalent in these trading areas. He pointed out that between 2013 and 2024, a staggering fifty-three markets across the nation experienced devastating fires, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.
In response to this critical situation, Ousmane Sonko introduced the comprehensive Program for Market Modernization and Management (PROMOGEM). Its strategic blueprint for 2025-2029 outlines plans for the extensive overhaul of 528 existing markets and the establishment of 67 brand-new, contemporary market facilities.
The Prime Minister also advocated for a fundamental institutional reform of PROMOGEM, aiming to grant it enhanced administrative and financial autonomy. To support this ambitious initiative, a substantial allocation of 57.5 billion CFA francs has been earmarked over a four-year period, integrated within the State’s Public Investment Plan.
According to the Prime Minister, the overarching objective is to forge a modern and efficient network of markets spanning the entire national territory. This endeavor will be characterized by stringent management practices, fostering collaboration between local territorial authorities and the domestic private sector.
