Post-match unrest rocks Besançon, leading to police injuries and arrests

Disorder erupted near the Robert Schwint bridge in Besançon, where approximately fifty individuals obstructed traffic following a recent Champions League match. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers were met with a barrage of projectiles, primarily from minors. The confrontation resulted in five police officers sustaining minor injuries. Motorists, caught in the gridlock, witnessed young people climbing onto their vehicles, with at least one car reported damaged. The group subsequently moved into the city center, concentrating around Place de la Révolution.

Observations indicate that several streets, including Grande rue, Battant, and rue Courbet, were affected by tear gas deployment. Patrons enjoying outdoor terraces and other passersby were swiftly ushered to safety by restaurant staff due to the widespread gas. Residents also reported electric bicycles being toppled and vandalized, alongside damage to public street furniture.

Mayor Fagaut further affirmed that efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators and ensure they are “brought to justice.
