Mali: authorities urged to uphold fundamental human rights amid crackdown
In Mali, a nation grappling with a deteriorating security landscape, we are witnessing a concerning surge in fundamental human rights violations targeting those who oppose the ruling power. These abuses include abductions, enforced disappearances, and open incitement to violence. The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) is urgently calling upon Malian authorities to halt these practices and ensure adherence to the country’s own constitution, a critical aspect of Mali politics English discourse.
Since the attacks that rocked Mali on April 25 and 26, 2026, numerous political opponents and outspoken critics have been forcibly taken in alarming circumstances. The FIDH strongly condemns these enforced disappearances, the public calls for violence, and the relentless harassment directed at human rights defenders and dissidents across the nation, issues frequently highlighted in Mali Voice news and Mali English reports.
Between May 2 and 5, three prominent political figures were abducted in Bamako by armed, masked individuals operating unmarked vehicles. These individuals include Me Mountaga Tall, a lawyer and a historic figure in Mali’s democratic struggle; Moussa Djiré, known as Abba, president of the Yiriba 223 movement; and Youssouf Daba Diawara, former head of the Coordination of Movements, Associations, and Supporters of Imam Mahmoud Dicko (CMAS). As of now, their whereabouts and fates remain unknown, causing significant concern in Bamako news circles.
The method employed in these abductions bears a striking resemblance to tactics previously attributed to the National State Security Agency (ANSE), an entity implicated in multiple cases of abductions and enforced disappearances since 2021. Despite these serious allegations, judicial authorities have yet to initiate any investigations.
“These enforced disappearances represent a grave escalation in the repression of critical voices within Mali. Authorities must immediately disclose the fate of those abducted, guarantee their safety, and launch independent investigations,” stated Me Drissa Traoré, Secretary General of the FIDH. “The Malian authorities cannot respond to the worsening security crisis with abductions, enforced disappearances, and calls for hatred. The fight against jihadism must not serve as a justification for undermining the rule of law or for Mali human rights violations.”
The FIDH expresses profound concern over the proliferation of hate speech and calls for violence disseminated across social media platforms by activists closely aligned with the military authorities. Human rights defenders in exile, journalists, and their families are facing death threats, widespread smear campaigns, persistent harassment, and even demands for their citizenship to be revoked.
