Gabon strengthens ties with Madagascar at independence celebrations

Representing President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, Vice-President of the Government (VPG) Hermann Immongault attended the 66th anniversary of Madagascar’s independence on June 26 in Antananarivo. The high-ranking Gabonese official joined other delegations in observing the military parade at Mahamasina Stadium, a spectacle celebrating the armed forces’ dedication, patriotism, and modernization efforts. The event’s theme, “reforms for Madagascar’s development,” underscored the nation’s commitment to progress.

The Gabonese delegation’s presence highlighted the strong bonds uniting the Gabonese and Malagasy peoples. It also reflected the shared determination of Libreville and Antananarivo to deepen their bilateral cooperation. This gesture followed the official visit of Malagasy President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, to Libreville from June 5 to 7. During their meeting at the Palais du Bord de Mer, Randrianirina praised the achievements of Gabon’s Transition while expressing his intent to draw inspiration from its governance model.

By entrusting the VPG with this diplomatic mission, President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s strategic priority: strengthening ties with Madagascar. The growing exchange of high-level visits signals a promising new chapter in bilateral relations, spanning politics, culture, and economic collaboration.
