The Gabonese Republic has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone by securing a vice-presidential position in the United Nations General Assembly’s 81st session, endorsed this past Tuesday on June 2, 2026. This election signifies Gabon’s triumphant return to the UN’s governing bureau after nearly ten years of absence.
Joining forces with five fellow African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—Gabon is set to formally commence its one-year mandate in September 2026, coinciding with the ceremonial launch of the 81st UN General Assembly session.
As a representative of the African Group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will play a pivotal role in shaping the international legislative agenda, working hand-in-hand with the newly elected President of the General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman.
During this critical session, Gabon will undertake crucial managerial and diplomatic responsibilities. These include presiding over key plenary sessions, both regular and high-level, while also overseeing the UN’s agenda. Gabon will further contribute to the influential General Committee, where it will assist in coordinating the agenda, organizing pivotal votes on global resolutions, and prioritizing institutional reforms.
Collaborating closely with fellow member states, Gabon will champion the African Group’s core priorities—sustainable development, climate action, and structural reforms within the UN—aligning these efforts with the strategic vision of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
