Gabon-EU talks in Libreville: strengthening cooperation and shared priorities

High-level discussions between Gabon and the European Union took place in Libreville, co-chaired by Hermann Immongault, Vice-President of Gabon’s government, and Cécile Abadie, the EU Ambassador to Gabon. The meeting centered on political reforms, economic prospects, environmental sustainability, and regional and multilateral challenges.

The session brought together Gabonese officials and ambassadors from EU member states accredited in Libreville. Key topics included the country’s economic climate, the Global Gateway strategy, forestry cooperation, sustainable fishing, maritime security, and broader regional and international issues.

During the talks, Ambassador Abadie emphasized the need to adapt Africa-Europe relations to an increasingly competitive global landscape. « The current geopolitical climate demands more transactional approaches and strategic agility, » she noted. She also highlighted the importance of a partnership based on mutual interests, while reaffirming the EU’s commitment to peace, security, good governance, and human rights.

The dialogue follows Gabon’s political transition and reflects efforts to build long-term cooperation. « This exchange offers an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding, set clear goals, and refine our collaborative frameworks, » she added. She called for greater data sharing, joint analyses, and coordinated action to align priorities moving forward.

The discussions also addressed pressing international crises, including the war in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and security challenges across Africa. Both sides concluded by reaffirming their commitment to advancing shared objectives and establishing a structured follow-up mechanism for cooperation projects.
