Yesterday, the Gabonese government and the European Union convened for the second strategic partnership dialogue at the Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Palace in the Cité de la Démocratie. Led by Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault and EU Ambassador to Gabon Cécile Abadie, the meeting followed the first session held in October 2024.
Immongault emphasized that this dialogue aligns with the Samoa Agreement, the foundational legal framework governing relations between the EU and African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) nations. He highlighted the agreement’s push for a “more balanced, action-oriented partnership that prioritizes tangible outcomes in public policy and investment.”
The discussions centered on four key pillars: political reforms and governance, economic prospects, environmental sustainability and natural resource management, and multilateral and regional cooperation. At the conclusion of the talks, both sides praised Gabon’s institutional reforms implemented during its transition period and exchanged perspectives on human rights and fundamental freedoms. “No topic was off-limits,” Immongault noted, adding that the talks helped “clear up any lingering uncertainties.”
Economic discussions included Gabon’s ongoing structural reforms, efforts to improve the business climate, and strategies to attract foreign investment. The European Union’s Global Gateway initiative was also highlighted as a potential framework for future collaboration.
Environmental sustainability took center stage, with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to sustainable forest management. They also explored opportunities for cooperation in sustainable fisheries, renewable energy, and waste management.
Finally, Gabon and the EU reaffirmed their dedication to multilateralism, noting strong alignment on regional and global issues such as maritime security and regional integration. Moving forward, both parties agreed to deepen their partnership and continue consultations on jointly identified priorities, fostering an environment of openness and mutual trust.
