Gabon eu partnership dialogue focuses on reforms and sustainable development

The second strategic partnership dialogue between Gabon and the European Union (EU) took place yesterday at the Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Palace in Libreville. The session, co-chaired by Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault and EU Ambassador to Gabon Cécile Abadie, follows the first meeting held in October 2024.

As highlighted by Mr. Immongault, this dialogue aligns with the Samoa Agreement, the legal foundation governing relations between the EU and African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries. He emphasized the need for a “more balanced, operational, and impact-driven partnership”, focusing on tangible results from public policies and investments.

The discussions covered four key areas: political reforms and governance, economic prospects, environmental sustainability and natural resource management, as well as multilateral and regional cooperation.

At the end of the deliberations, both parties acknowledged Gabon’s institutional reforms during its transition period and exchanged perspectives on human rights and fundamental freedoms. “No topic was off-limits,” Immongault stated, noting that all concerns were addressed transparently.

The economic outlook for Gabon was a major topic, with discussions on structural reforms, improving the business climate, and measures to attract foreign investment. The EU’s Global Gateway initiative was also highlighted as a potential driver for collaboration.

Environmental sustainability remained a central theme, with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to sustainable forest management. They also explored cooperation opportunities in sustainable fisheries, energy, and waste management.

The two delegations underscored their commitment to multilateralism, finding common ground on regional and global challenges such as maritime security and economic integration.

Moving forward, Gabon and the EU are set to deepen their cooperation and continue discussions on jointly identified priorities, fostering an environment of openness and mutual trust.
