Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak: 19 patients recover in Democratic Republic of Congo
- Health
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Ebola Bundibugyo response continues to show positive results as 19 patients have now recovered and been discharged from treatment centers. This milestone comes after the outbreak was officially declared on May 15 in the eastern provinces.
The rapid mobilization of health teams across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu has been crucial in managing the spread. As of June 7, health authorities report 550 confirmed cases, including 101 deaths, with 309 patients currently under isolation for treatment.
Ituri Province remains the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for 17 of the 25 affected health zones. The most affected areas include Aru, Aungba, Bambu, Bunia, Damas, Gety, Kilo, Komanda, Lita, Logo, Mambasa, Mangala, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Nyankunde, Rimba, and Rwampara.
Strengthening response efforts
The recovery of these 19 patients demonstrates the effectiveness of the coordinated response led by the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) and supported by international partners. Enhanced surveillance, rapid isolation of cases, and community engagement have played key roles in containing the spread.
Health officials continue to urge the public to remain vigilant, follow hygiene protocols, and report any suspected symptoms immediately. The situation remains under close monitoring as teams work to prevent further transmission and bring the outbreak to a swift conclusion.
