Constitutional courts of Gabon and Togo strengthen collaboration

Gabon and Togo are taking concrete steps to deepen collaboration between their constitutional courts, marking a new chapter in judicial cooperation. The presidents of these two high courts, Dieudonné Aba’a Owono and Professor Djobo-Babakane Coulibaley, laid the groundwork for this partnership during a meeting at the Constitutional Palace in Libreville, following the Togolese delegation’s working visit to Gabon.

This initiative reflects the strong ties between Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, leaders who have consistently aligned on regional and global issues. Both jurists emphasized that this judicial rapprochement is more than symbolic—it addresses pressing challenges facing constitutional justice today.

In a rapidly evolving society, constitutional courts must not only uphold the rule of law but also safeguard the dignity, rights, and freedoms of future generations. “The dialogue between our courts goes beyond institutional benefit—it strengthens Africa as a whole,” stated Dieudonné Aba’a Owono. He expressed hope that this meeting would be the first of many, fostering ongoing collaboration among constitutional judges to exchange insights, legal precedents, and key concerns.

Professor Djobo-Babakane Coulibaley echoed this sentiment, highlighting the urgency of their joint efforts. “In an era marked by global instability and challenges to the rule of law, our courts must reaffirm shared values and principles,” he remarked. The Togolese delegation concluded its visit on Wednesday, wrapping up a productive exchange focused on mutual growth and judicial excellence.
