Border security operation intercepts 24 migrants near Kassouala
A routine border patrol in northeastern Benin led to the interception of 24 individuals attempting to cross into neighboring Burkina Faso. The operation, conducted on the morning of June 16, 2026, unfolded at the Okpara bridge checkpoint in Kassouala.
Border enforcement officers conducting a standard inspection at the Okpara bridge in Kassouala made the discovery around 8:30 a.m. Among the group of 24 travelers intercepted were 23 Nigerian citizens of Hausa ethnicity. Their intended destination was reportedly Burkina Faso.
Upon questioning at the local police station, the migrants disclosed their journey began in Tchaki, a Nigerian locality, before they walked to Boukouro, a Beninese village close to the border. They admitted their goal was to reach gold panning sites in Burkina Faso.
While all individuals possessed valid identification documents, authorities remain suspicious about the circumstances surrounding their travel. Investigators are particularly focused on a 20-year-old Beninese man from Bassila, currently residing in Parakou, who is believed to have arranged this clandestine crossing.
All detainees were transferred to the Tchaourou police station for further processing. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether this incident is part of a larger organized migrant trafficking network.
