Bénin government outlines bold vision for equitable development and security

On May 28, 2026, Romuald Wadagni, President of the Bénin Republic, chaired the inaugural Council of Ministers meeting of his first seven-year term (2026–2033). Held at the iconic Palais de la Marina in Cotonou, this session set the strategic tone for the new government’s agenda, just days after the president’s official swearing-in ceremony.

A new chapter for public service

Addressing the freshly appointed cabinet members, President Wadagni extended his congratulations, framing their roles not as positions of authority but as missions of national service. He emphasized that leadership in the executive branch demands unwavering commitment, integrity, and selflessness, rejecting any interpretation of governance as a personal privilege.

The president underscored three core values for the government’s work: sobriety, absolute integrity, and solidarity. These principles, he insisted, must guide every decision, ensuring that public service remains free from partisan or individual agendas.

Priorities for inclusive growth and national security

During the meeting, several key priorities for the new administration were outlined. One of the most pressing objectives is reducing regional disparities across Bénin’s municipalities. President Wadagni called for accelerated efforts to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas, with a focus on:

  • Expanding modern infrastructure in underserved regions
  • Improving access to essential public services
  • Increasing investment in local governance and territorial collectivities

Another critical focus is national security, particularly in the northern regions where recent armed attacks have heightened vigilance. The president urged the government to reinforce defense capabilities and maintain robust territorial protection measures, ensuring the safety of all citizens and the stability of the nation.

Streamlined governance for greater efficiency

The new administration is also introducing structural reforms to enhance governmental efficiency. Effective immediately, the Council of Ministers will convene monthly on the first Wednesday of each month. Additional extraordinary sessions can be scheduled as needed to address urgent matters.

The Interministerial Committee, responsible for coordinating cross-sector policies, will meet twice monthly—specifically on the first and third Mondays. To tackle complex challenges, the government plans to organize joint sessions involving the Interministerial Committee, the Council of Ministers, and sector-specific ministers, fostering collaboration and streamlined decision-making.

The road ahead

This inaugural Council of Ministers meeting signals the official launch of institutional operations under President Wadagni’s new term, following his oath of office on May 24, 2026. With a clear vision for equitable development and a strengthened security framework, the government is poised to implement transformative policies aimed at building a more prosperous and secure Bénin.
