Bénin’s new president, Romuald Wadagni, outlines septennat priorities

Just days following his inauguration, Romuald Wadagni, the newly installed president of Bénin and successor to Patrice Talon, convened his inaugural Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, May 28, 2026. This significant gathering officially commenced his seven-year presidential term, spanning 2026 to 2033. During this symbolic first session, the head of state emphatically established the foundational principles, core values, and ambitious objectives that will define his administration’s trajectory over the next seven years.

Two critical priorities have been distinctly outlined for this septennat. Foremost among them, and arguably the most transformative, is the complete eradication of extreme poverty coupled with a substantial reduction in developmental disparities across various communes. President Wadagni championed a more robust regional approach to development, aiming to progressively uplift the most underserved territories. The second paramount focus is national security. Acknowledging the persistent regional tensions, the head of state directed his government to commit unequivocally to the steadfast defense and comprehensive protection of Bénin’s national borders.

Regarding governmental structure, the president unveiled a revised operational cadence. The Council of Ministers will now convene for its ordinary session once a month, specifically on the first Wednesday. Complementing this, the Interministerial Committee is scheduled to meet twice monthly, on the first and third Mondays. The framework will also include thematic Cabinet Councils, designed to bridge the gaps between these regular sessions and ensure diligent oversight of sectoral policies. This meticulously structured work architecture underscores a clear commitment to discipline and consistency in managing state affairs.

Concluding this initial assembly, Romuald Wadagni urged his government to embark ‘’resolutely on their tasks,” expressing his firm belief that the diligence and quality of their efforts will directly translate into improved living standards for the populace. This inaugural Council of Ministers meeting, both understated and substantial, has effectively laid out the blueprint for a governance model centered on tangible outcomes, equitable territorial development, and robust national cohesion—formidable challenges indeed as Bénin steps into this promising new septennat.
