Yaoundé’s urban evolution: from village to political hub

«Yaoundé has transformed beyond recognition over the past two decades,» shared a lifelong resident born in the Cameroonian capital. «Once a modest village spread across seven hills, today’s cityscape reflects the fruits of modern urban planning. The changes fill me with pride.»

Mbarga Obama, nearing his 90th year, has witnessed firsthand the city’s remarkable growth. «In earlier times, the urban core centered on Plateau Atemengué, with modest expansion toward neighborhoods like Mokolo and Nlong-Kak. Beyond these areas, the landscape remained semi-rural,» he recalled with nostalgia.

Today, Yaoundé’s allure draws thousands of new residents annually, swelling its population and absorbing surrounding localities into its sprawling embrace. The transformation, while impressive, has sparked critical discussions among urban planners about the city’s future direction.

Blaise Feugang, a senior official at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in Nyong and So’, emphasizes the need for vertical expansion. «Cities like Yaoundé must prioritize high-rise construction over horizontal spread,» he argues. «Tall buildings optimize space, reduce infrastructure costs, and elevate a city’s aesthetic appeal.»

Experts widely agree that for Yaoundé to meet international standards as a political capital, strategic redevelopment is essential—particularly in improving housing conditions for its growing population.
