Yaoundé gears up for 51st Francophonie parliamentary assembly

Progress update on Cameroon’s hosting of the 51st Francophonie parliamentary assembly

In two weeks, Cameroon will take center stage as host of the 51st session of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (APF). The organizing committee, led by deputy Hilarion Etong, has outlined key preparations during a recent press briefing. Over 300 delegates are expected, including parliamentary chamber heads and 80 young participants, representing all four APF regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.

Among the high-profile attendees are Amelia Lakrafi, APF’s delegate general, and Louise Mouchoukiwabo, secretary general of the International Organisation of La Francophonie. Registration numbers have already reached 275 participants.

The organizing committee, established in January 2026, comprises members from both the Senate and National Assembly. Under Hilarion Etong’s leadership, it operates 17 subcommittees covering every aspect of the event. Eight hotels of varying standards have been secured to accommodate attendees.

The assembly’s agenda will focus on two critical themes: “Multilateralism and State Sovereignty” and “Francophone Parliaments Confronting Climate Change in a Shifting Global Landscape.” The first theme will explore rising protectionism and collective responses to terrorism, migration flows, and democratic instability within the Francophone sphere. The second theme empowers parliamentarians to translate climate agreements into national legislation.

The program includes an APF bureau meeting on July 7, 2026, followed by youth and women parliamentarians’ network meetings on July 8. That same day, bureau members will visit the Nachtigal site. On July 9, the four permanent APF commissions will convene before the official opening on July 10. The session concludes on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
