The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has launched a strengthened health response to tackle the Ebola outbreak, following confirmation of a case in France involving a humanitarian doctor who had worked in an affected region of the DRC.

In an official statement, Congolese authorities described the situation as a “serious health alert,” emphasizing the need to prevent any cross-border transmission. The government underscored that these measures align with international health security recommendations to mitigate risks of further spread.

All individuals arriving from Ebola-affected areas in the DRC must now undergo a strict 21-day isolation period, equivalent to the virus’s maximum incubation time. This applies to both domestic and international travel.

The measure aims to eliminate silent transmission and enhance monitoring of asymptomatic cases. Health authorities stress that this precautionary step is critical in curbing the spread of highly infectious diseases through international travel.

The Ministry of Health highlighted that the strategy prioritizes early detection and containment, particularly for individuals who may not exhibit symptoms immediately upon arrival.

French health officials confirmed an Ebola case in a doctor who had recently worked in the Ituri province, a known hotspot. The patient was isolated upon detection, and a contact-tracing investigation was launched.

Investigations revealed the doctor showed no symptoms during travel from Ituri to Kinshasa before departing the country. This incident has raised concerns about the challenges of identifying cases during the pre-symptomatic phase, even with screening at entry points.

French authorities activated emergency protocols, traced contacts, and assessed the risk to the general population as “low but under surveillance.”

In a move toward transparency and international cooperation, Kinshasa formally notified French authorities to share travel and medical data related to the patient. This collaboration aims to retrace potential contacts within the DRC and strengthen epidemiological tracking.

The exchange of information adheres to the International Health Regulations (IHR), which mandate cooperation in the event of transboundary health threats. The DRC government emphasized the importance of swift and structured data sharing to prevent secondary transmission.

At the national level, health teams are intensifying surveillance and case management in affected regions like Ituri. Enhanced screening measures are being deployed at major transit points, including airports and transport hubs, to prevent unmonitored movement.

The government is also calling on community leaders, media, and civil society to support public awareness efforts, focusing on recognizing symptoms and preventive measures.

Health authorities reiterate that community trust and rapid reporting of suspected cases are vital to controlling the outbreak. They urge the public to avoid stigmatizing patients and to fully cooperate with health teams.

The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to monitor the situation closely. The DRC has reassured the international community of its commitment to containing the outbreak through strict measures, international cooperation, and community mobilization.

The government is determined to prevent any further spread beyond national borders, combining stringent controls, cross-border coordination, and public engagement to ensure long-term containment.
