Mali: relentless support for the village of Forgho despite worsening crises
The 16th general assembly of the Forgho Village Support Association in northern Mali was held recently.
During the opening address, Association President Marie-Jo Mennelet shared deeply concerning updates about Mali: “I have no encouraging news from the country, which is facing even greater challenges than before.” Indeed, the surge in jihadist attacks, severe shortages, water and electricity cuts, soaring prices, and extreme heat have made daily life unbearable for many Malians.
Despite these hardships, the association maintains a strong bond with its partners in Forgho and Bamako, continuing to meet their needs with unwavering dedication and solidarity. In her annual report, Mennelet highlighted that schools in Forgho and Kotchekaraï remain operational, a rarity in northern and central Mali. While no new sponsorships were launched this year, existing ones have been sustained through the generosity of members and donors.
The financial support has enabled the purchase of school supplies for the new academic year, food for the school canteen, examination fees for the DEF (Diplôme d’Études Fondamentales), as well as medicines, seeds, and essential infrastructure repairs in local schools and villages. Though few public events were organized this year, funds were raised through concerts and theatrical performances.
The financial outlook remains positive, with revenue primarily from donations, memberships, and sponsorships. Expenditures were prioritized for educational aid, medical supplies, seeds, support for the Bamako orphanage, and emergency assistance for families and teachers.
The assembly concluded with the unanimous approval of the annual reports and the election of new board members, followed by a traditional gathering and warm exchanges among attendees.
