UNESCO joins Mali’s 27th environment fortnight launch in Bamako
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) delegation in Mali actively participated in the official launch ceremony of the 27th edition of the Environment Fortnight in Bamako on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The event, held under the patronage of the Minister of State for Economy and Finance, Alousséni Sanou, brought together government officials, environmental ministers from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) — including Burkina Faso and Niger — alongside national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society, private sector representatives, and media professionals.
Strengthening environmental awareness across communities
The 27th Environment Fortnight in Mali is designed to bring together national initiatives aimed at heightening community awareness about the preservation of natural resources and the adoption of sustainable environmental practices. This year’s event runs from June 5 to 15, 2026, and focuses on two key themes aligned with international observances:
- « Climate crisis and solutions for a safer, more resilient, and sustainable future » — linked to World Environment Day;
- « Pastures: recognize, respect, restore » — inspired by the International Day for Combating Desertification and Drought.
The UNESCO delegation, led by its Representative in Mali, Ali Mohamed Sinane, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the Government of Mali in raising environmental awareness, promoting best practices, and implementing concrete actions for sustainable and resilient development.
UNESCO’s role in advancing Mali’s green agenda
The launch ceremony, presided over by Minister Alousséni Sanou on behalf of the Prime Minister, underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in tackling environmental challenges. Key objectives include fostering community-led conservation efforts and integrating sustainable land management practices into national policies.
The Environment Fortnight serves as a platform for dialogue, education, and partnership, bringing together diverse actors to address pressing environmental issues such as climate change, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. By participating in this initiative, UNESCO reinforces its dedication to Mali’s environmental sustainability goals and its broader mission of building a greener future for West Africa.
