UA mediator Faure Gnassingbé pushes for peace in eastern DRC

UA mediator urges stronger coordination to end eastern DRC conflict

As the African Union’s (AU) designated mediator for the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s eastern crisis, Togo’s Prime Minister Faure Gnassingbé has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring stability in the region. Speaking at a high-level review meeting in Lomé this week, he outlined progress in consolidating Africa’s mediation framework and called for renewed collective action to address ongoing challenges.

The gathering brought together key facilitators from the African Union, international partners including the United Nations and International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as regional blocs such as the East African Community, Economic Community of Central African States, Southern African Development Community, and International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

Gnassingbé highlighted significant strides made since the beginning of the year, particularly in streamlining the mediation architecture. « We have achieved a major milestone by bringing greater structure to Africa’s mediation efforts in the Great Lakes region, » he stated. « This meeting represents a turning point in our collective pursuit of lasting peace in eastern DRC. »

Despite these advances, the mediator stressed the need for continued collaboration to strengthen coherence among the various peace initiatives underway. « While progress is evident, our work is far from complete. We must deepen coordination to ensure all efforts align toward a common goal, » he emphasized.

Reaffirming his resolve to fulfill his mandate, Gnassingbé underscored the importance of sustained international support. « Africa’s peace efforts require both determination and humility. Despite obstacles, we are witnessing growing goodwill from partners ready to join this mission, » he noted. « Together, we will advance with perseverance and unity. »

To build on recent momentum, the meeting approved concrete steps, including adjustments to the facilitators’ work plans for the second half of 2026 and the development—within two weeks—of an operational action plan detailing implementation strategies for agreed decisions. Participants pledged to implement these measures with diligence and consistency.

Next steps in eastern DRC mediation

The renewed focus comes as regional stakeholders intensify efforts to stabilize the eastern DRC, where recurring conflicts have displaced millions and strained regional security. With Gnassingbé at the helm, Africa’s mediation strategy aims to align diverse initiatives under a unified framework, fostering sustainable solutions for lasting peace.

The push for coordination reflects broader recognition that fragmented approaches have hindered progress. By centralizing planning and fostering collaboration among international and regional actors, the AU’s mediation seeks to transform good intentions into tangible results on the ground.
