The State Minister of Finance, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, and the World Bank’s Resident Representative in Chad, Farouk Mollah Banna, held a press briefing this past Friday, May 22, to unveil details about the African Water Forum « From Vision to Action », scheduled for July 15–16, 2026 in N’Djamena.
N’Djamena to lead continental water security discussions
During the announcement, State Minister Nguilin expressed deep satisfaction over Chad’s role as host of this pivotal pan-African gathering. « We take immense pride in welcoming the African Water Forum to Chad. From July 15–16, 2026, N’Djamena will serve as the epicenter for turning water strategies into concrete actions across the continent, » he stated.
Chad’s abundant water resources under the spotlight
The minister highlighted Chad’s status as a « water-rich nation, » citing the expansive Lake Chad, major river systems—Chari, Logone, Batha, and Barh Aouk—as well as lakes Fitri, Léré, and Iro. He also emphasized the country’s shared responsibility in managing transboundary basins such as the Nubian Aquifer, which supports multiple countries in the region.
Climate change and rising demand strain water security
Despite these natural advantages, Chad continues to face pressing water-related challenges. Escalating climate change impacts, rapid population growth, and aging hydraulic infrastructure are straining water availability and quality. Nguilin underscored that these realities make Chad’s involvement in continental water security dialogues not just necessary, but urgent.
« Hosting this forum is both a vote of confidence from our partners and a clear commitment by our government to prioritize water security at the highest national level, » he explained.
World Bank pledges $160 million for water sector support
Farouk Mollah Banna, the World Bank’s Resident Representative in Chad, confirmed that a major financial initiative is in the final stages of preparation. « A $160 million project aimed at transforming the water sector is currently being developed. It will be presented to the Board of Directors just two weeks before the forum, » he revealed.
Forum to unite leaders in sustainable water solutions
The African Water Forum will bring together heads of state, technical partners, financial backers, and water experts from across Africa. The two-day event will focus on identifying actionable strategies to enhance water governance, promote equitable access, and build resilience against climate-induced water scarcity.
