Sonko’s allies denounce alleged political witch-hunt at touba gathering

Senegal’s ruling party escalates Touba rally against alleged judicial persecution

Leaders of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) have intensified their campaign in the holy city of Touba, rallying religious and political support after the detention of party coordinator Pape Malick Ndour. The gathering at the residence of Serigne Mountakha Mbacké has reignited national debates about justice, accountability, and political targeting in Senegal.

Following the arrest of Pape Malick Ndour in connection with the Community Agricultural Domains Program (Prodac) case, the APR has launched a strategic outreach effort to Senegal’s religious leadership. A high-level delegation from the Convergence of Republican Cadre (CCR) traveled to Touba to present their case to Serigne Mountakha Mbacké, seeking spiritual and moral support in what they describe as a politically motivated judicial siege.

Religious mediation meets political grievance

The CCR delegation’s mission extends beyond mere political protest. Party officials view Ndour’s detention as part of a broader pattern targeting former government figures. During the meeting at Touba, Bocar Diongue, spokesperson for the delegation, outlined their position with clarity: « Today we stand before the General Khalif of the Mourides to share the injustices faced by our colleague, Minister Pape Malick Ndour, who has been unjustly imprisoned. »

Timing and targeting questioned

The APR leadership argues that Ndour’s involvement in the Prodac case is chronologically impossible. Their evidence points to a 2018 financial inspection report that predates Ndour’s 2019 appointment as coordinator. « The report dates back to 2018, » Diongue emphasized. « Pape Malick Ndour was appointed in 2019. How can he be held responsible for decisions made before he even took office? »

This argument forms the cornerstone of their defense, suggesting that the prosecution is not about administrative accountability but political retribution. The CCR has compiled a list of similar cases, including former ministers Farba Ngom, Mansour Faye, and Moustapha Diop, all reportedly detained without substantial evidence.

Sonko named as architect of repression

The delegation did not mince words when addressing the Prime Minister’s role. « Ousmane Sonko stands behind every imprisonment of our members, » Diongue declared. « We declare this publicly and without reservation. But let it be known: the fight will continue regardless of the cost. »

The message resonated with the religious leaders, who offered prayers for Ndour’s release and solidarity with the APR’s cause. The delegation then proceeded to Thiénaba, where they met with Serigne Assane Seck, the General Khalif of Thiénaba. The visit concluded with prayers for Ndour’s wellbeing and unwavering support for the embattled party leader.
