Chad’s national museum shines during inaugural museum night

N’Djamena recently hosted the pioneering “Museum Night” on Monday, May 18, 2026, an initiative spearheaded by the Cultural Heritage House of Chad, through the National Museum of Chad. This significant event, held under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourist Development, Culture, and Handicrafts, coincided with International Museum Day, marking a new chapter in the valorization of Chad’s rich cultural heritage.

From 8 PM onwards, a vibrant cultural and festive atmosphere enveloped the museum grounds. Guests were greeted at the entrance by the National Ballet of Chad, whose captivating traditional dances offered an immediate and immersive introduction to the nation’s profound choreographic legacy.

“It’s truly spectacular to experience Chadian traditional dance during the Museum Night. I’ve just arrived, eager to explore the wonders within the National Museum, but these artistic displays have already left me completely mesmerized,” shared Anne Marie-Thérèse, a visitor clearly delighted by the unfolding spectacle.

The nocturnal exploration was thoughtfully arranged into various sections, allowing attendees to freely wander through the permanent exhibition spaces. Visitors engaged with a diverse and interactive program, featuring expert-guided demonstrations of art objects, traditional tales passionately narrated by griots and museum guides, documentary screenings illuminating Chad’s tangible and intangible heritage, alongside an array of compelling artistic performances.

Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, Director of the National Ballet, articulated his view that this event presented an extraordinary opportunity.

“Our traditional dances are an essential component of our intangible heritage. We adorned the stage with objects once used daily by our ancestors. This provides a crucial chance for the younger generation to connect with these historically significant items. We earnestly hope that the Museum Night can become a recurring event, perhaps three times a year, as it offers a unique platform for celebrating our culture.”

Notably, the Ambassador of France to Chad and their delegation were also present, underscoring the international interest in initiatives dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Chadian cultural treasures.
