Sonelgaz launches 40 MW power plant project in N’Djamena

Sonelgaz team arrives in N'Djamena for 40 MW power plant project

A high-level delegation from Sonelgaz, led by its International CEO Yazid Djellouli, has arrived in N’Djamena to kickstart the construction of a 40 MW power plant in Chad. This initiative aligns with Algeria’s strategy to strengthen South-South cooperation, particularly with Chad, following the official visit of Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Algeria from April 22 to 24.

The delegation was received by top officials including the Director-General of Tchad-Elec, Chad’s Ambassador to Algeria, and key ministers from Chad’s Ministry of Energy. Meetings were held with the Chadian State Minister for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, and the Minister of Water and Energy, Passalé Kanabé Marcelin. These high-level discussions underscore the strategic importance of this project in deepening economic and energy ties between the two nations.

Key discussions and next steps

The Algerian delegation engaged in technical and regulatory discussions with Tchad-Elec representatives to finalize project priorities. The meetings focused on:

  • Establishing a joint roadmap for project execution
  • Forming bilateral working teams to enhance coordination
  • Reviewing technical and regulatory compliance for the site
  • Assessing existing infrastructure and grid connection feasibility

The delegation will conduct on-site assessments to verify technical conditions, grid compatibility, and regulatory alignment. These evaluations are crucial for ensuring the project meets international quality and efficiency standards before construction begins.

Building a sustainable energy partnership

This project reflects the shared commitment of Algeria and Chad to develop a long-term energy partnership. Sonelgaz is not only contributing technical expertise but also fostering capacity building and sharing practical solutions to meet Africa’s growing energy needs.

The initiative demonstrates how strategic collaborations can drive sustainable development while reinforcing economic integration across the continent.
