Senegal’s new cabinet formed without pastef representation

Le Premier ministre sénégalais Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô

Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô of Senegal unveiled the composition of a new 30-member government on Monday evening. Notably, the cabinet does not include representatives from the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite its majority status in the National Assembly.

This executive reshuffle takes place amidst a period of national political realignment, marked by the inclusion of various technocratic and political figures within the new team. Several hours prior to the official list’s release, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had already declared that members of his political formation would not be participating in this new governmental structure.

Outlining the strategic direction for the incoming team, the Senegalese Prime Minister characterized it as a «mission government with an obligation for results». He emphasized that the cabinet is built upon both political and technocratic foundations, while also allocating significant roles to young people and women.

He further elaborated that the government’s approach would feature a revised methodology, prioritizing institutional coherence and actively mobilizing both national expertise and the talents of the Senegalese diaspora.

The new governmental configuration sees the reappointment of several ministers from the previous administration. These include Cheikh Diba for Economy, Cheikh Niane for Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye for Water and Sanitation, and Moustapha Guirassy for National Education.

Additionally, other key Senegalese officials retaining their portfolios are Ibrahima Sy for Health, Moussa Bala Fofana for Urban Planning, Yankhoba Diémé for Armed Forces, Déthié Fall for Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr for Communication.

This comprehensive restructuring follows the decision by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on May 26 to appoint Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister. Lô succeeds Ousmane Sonko, who was subsequently elected to lead the Senegalese National Assembly.
