The Senegalese Minister of Land and Air Transport, Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, has forcefully rejected statements made by opposition leader Ousmane Sonko during his recent visit to Touba. Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, alleged that illicit funds had been laundered in the holy city, a claim Ndiaye dismissed as deeply offensive.
Speaking on national television, Ndiaye condemned Sonko’s remarks as « a profound lack of respect » not only toward the city of Touba but also its residents and the spiritual values of Mouridism. He emphasized that such accusations reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of Touba’s heritage, stating: « The people of Touba are known for their dignity and unwavering commitment to the teachings of Serigne Touba. To suggest they could be swayed by stolen wealth is a grave misjudgment. »
Ndiaye also pointed to the absence of key local leaders during Sonko’s visit as evidence of widespread disapproval of the opposition leader’s statements. He praised President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for his deep understanding of Touba’s significance, noting: « The President recognizes the invaluable role of Touba and its people. He is actively working to address their concerns and deliver tangible solutions. »
In addition, the minister commended Prime Minister Mouhamadou Al Amine Lo for his efforts in resolving long-standing issues under the President’s guidance, calling his performance « remarkable. » Ndiaye urged Senegalese citizens to prioritize national development and unity over political disputes, reaffirming his confidence in President Faye’s leadership.
« The President’s sole focus is on the progress of Senegal, » Ndiaye stated. « Despite attempts to undermine him, he remains steadfast in his mission: meeting the needs of the people and steering the nation toward growth and prosperity. »
