Senegal politics: Sonko’s clash with Diomaye over political funds reform

The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has publicly exposed a significant disagreement with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the oversight of political funds—a reform that was a cornerstone of their party’s presidential campaign.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that it was Deputy Guy Marius Sagna who initiated the parliamentary process to legislate on the matter. However, Sonko expressed reservations about the approach, arguing that such a pivotal reform should originate from the executive branch rather than the National Assembly. He emphasized that he had personally raised these concerns with the President, stressing the urgency of government intervention on this critical issue.

In response, President Diomaye adopted a measured stance, requesting additional time to assess the feasibility of the reform without committing to a specific deadline. This cautious approach has now prompted Sonko to issue a stark warning: if the President continues to delay a decision, he will bypass the Presidency and directly submit the proposal to the Council of Ministers for approval. This bold move underscores the growing governance tensions between Senegal’s two top leaders.

Beyond the immediate dispute over political funds, this confrontation highlights deeper divisions in leadership dynamics and policy execution within the Senegalese executive.
