Senegal: Sonko extends olive branch to President Faye amid calls for political dialogue
Political developments.
The newly appointed President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has called for urgent political dialogue with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Despite deep ideological divides, Sonko reassured that his party, Pastef, will not pursue measures that could destabilize the government.
Sonko questions the legitimacy of Faye’s government
In his first public address since his removal from office on May 22, Ousmane Sonko delivered a sharp critique of the newly formed government under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. “A nation is serious; governance is serious,” he declared during a press conference in Dakar. He argued that the cabinet lacks a “structured political foundation,” emphasizing that the president must acknowledge the current balance of power in the National Assembly, where Pastef holds 130 out of 165 seats.
Pastef commits to constructive engagement, not confrontation
Despite his criticism, Sonko emphasized that Pastef will not seek to topple the government. “If we wanted to, this administration could fall within 72 hours. But we will not obstruct it. Instead, we will support it,” he stated. His remarks underscored the importance of national stability to reassure investors and prevent a return to political turmoil.
A plea for calm and dialogue to avert further unrest
Amid lingering tensions between former allies, Sonko issued a call for “wise and constructive political dialogue.” He warned against repeating the unrest that gripped Senegal between 2021 and 2024. While condemning provocations against his supporters, he urged the youth to remain measured, stressing that “peace requires two willing parties.”
