Rwanda-DR Congo: enforcing Washington accord obligations at center of talks

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe joined our studio this week to discuss the latest developments in the Rwanda-DR Congo peace process. Last week, Kigali and Kinshasa held their sixth joint follow-up committee meeting in London, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to de-escalating tensions—particularly in the Minembwe region—and broadening the ceasefire verification mechanism. However, this pledge comes amid escalating U.S. sanctions targeting Rwandan officials and businesses accused of facilitating gold and coltan trafficking from areas controlled by the M23/AFCL rebel alliance. During a United Nations Security Council briefing, U.S. envoy Massad Boulos raised serious concerns about Kigali’s adherence to its commitments. Can Rwanda maintain its position in the face of mounting international scrutiny?
