RDC : Kamitatu likens Tshisekedi to Louis XIV, warning of absolute rule and court flatterers

The political climate in the République Démocratique du Congo is currently marked by concerns over a shift toward authoritarianism. Olivier Kamitatu, the chief of staff for Moïse Katumbi, has characterized the current leadership’s direction as an attempt to establish a regime similar to that of Louis XIV, where the head of state governs with absolute power, flanked by a circle of sycophants and devoted followers.

During a recent public discussion, Kamitatu explained that the nation’s Constitution was specifically designed to act as a barrier against such personal ambitions. He invoked the classical imagery of Ulysse, the Greek hero who had himself lashed to the mast of his ship to resist the seductive yet dangerous songs of the sirens. In this analogy, the Constitution serves as the mast that keeps the nation on course, preventing leaders from being led astray by the allure of total control.

The Constitution as a democratic safeguard

According to Kamitatu, the fundamental laws of the RDC must remain insulated from the temporary political passions of those in power. He emphasized that the legal framework is intended to protect the rights of minority groups who might otherwise be marginalized by a dominant majority. Furthermore, he noted that the document acts as a guardian for the interests of future generations who have yet to participate in the democratic process.

He further asserted that attempting to transform the supreme law into a tool for individual political gain is a direct violation of the Sun City agreement. This historic pact was the foundation upon which the modern RDC was reconstructed, and Kamitatu warned that undermining it would be a fundamental betrayal of the republic’s core values.
