Political tensions in Senegal over new justice minister appointment

Political tensions rise as Senegal’s new justice minister takes office

Senegal’s political landscape is experiencing fresh strain following the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as the new Minister of Justice. Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has publicly voiced reservations about the selection, warning that it may not bode well for his movement’s interests.

Concerns over judicial ties

Sonko’s skepticism stems from Sarr’s previous involvement in several high-profile legal cases that have historically strained relations between Pastef and certain judicial bodies. The Pastef leader highlighted that the newly appointed Justice Minister was directly connected to sensitive judicial proceedings, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest.

«The composition of the Justice Ministry team does not inspire confidence within our ranks,» Sonko stated. «This individual’s track record in key legal matters raises legitimate concerns.» While Sonko has not yet made a final judgment, his party remains cautious, vowing to scrutinize the new minister’s actions closely.

Prime Minister also under scrutiny

Sonko did not limit his criticism to the Justice Minister alone. He also addressed Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, urging him to adhere strictly to his technocratic role. Sonko accused the Prime Minister of overstepping into political maneuvering, despite his designation as a non-partisan administrator.

«I call on the Prime Minister to remain within his mandate as a technocrat,» Sonko declared. «He was chosen for his expertise, not for political engagement. Stepping beyond these boundaries could have consequences.» Sonko went further, hinting at his awareness of certain government initiatives, advising caution to avoid provoking further confrontation.

Internal party divisions deepen

The Pastef leader also targeted members of his own party who accepted positions within the new government, despite the party’s stated opposition to such collaborations. Among those singled out were Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé, whom Sonko accused of acting independently rather than in alignment with party directives.

«These individuals joined the executive branch on their own accord,» Sonko emphasized. «Their actions will be addressed in due course.» His remarks underscore growing internal divisions within Pastef, as the party grapples with the implications of its members’ participation in government.

The appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Justice Minister has quickly become the focal point of these tensions, with Sonko reserving judgment until concrete actions are taken. Meanwhile, the broader political climate in Senegal remains tense, with further developments expected as the new administration takes shape.
