Disturbing video presented in Martinez Zogo murder trial in Cameroon
In Cameroon, the ongoing Martinez Zogo case reached a pivotal and profoundly impactful moment before the Military Tribunal of Yaoundé. Over two days, June 1st and 2nd, judges presented, for the first time, a video capturing the journalist’s final moments. These images, depicting extreme violence, deeply affected his loved ones and elicited a strong emotional response from everyone present in the courtroom.
A video that stirs deep emotion in Cameroon
An oppressive silence descended upon the Yaoundé military tribunal courtroom on June 1st, 2026. On the screen, Martinez Zogo appeared, lying on the ground. His body bore undeniable marks of the severe abuse he had endured. Covered in blood, he struggled to speak, repeatedly pleading for assistance. The footage was harrowing, almost unbearable to watch.
The sheer shock prompted the tribunal to suspend the session. Lawyer Ludovic Sabze remarked, “Emotionally, it’s powerful, very powerful. I believe I am not alone in feeling this way.“
The following day, as proceedings resumed, the emotional weight persisted. Faces remained somber, minds still reeling from the previous day’s disturbing images. These crucial images were traced back to the Google account of Warrant Officer Godje Oumarou Vincent, who was then an agent serving at the Directorate General of External Research (DGRE).
These critical details were brought to light by Georges Bell Bitjoka, a cybercrime expert and a witness for the prosecution. Maître Calvin Job, representing Martinez Zogo’s family, views this development as a significant breakthrough in uncovering the truth. According to Job, “This report completely reshuffles the deck. It sweeps away everything we’ve been told since the beginning.” He commended “the quality of the work, the thoroughness of the research, and the technical expertise of this expert,” further stating that if “the tribunal relies on this report, it will have already completed 98% of its work.“
However, one profound question continues to loom over this trial in Cameroon: who orchestrated the abduction and torture of Martinez Zogo? As of now, no mastermind has been definitively identified.
A sense of unfinished business
Paul Chouta expressed a feeling of “unfinished business. The expert demonstrated a surge in communications between Amougou Belinga and Justin Danwe from January 18th to 28th – the period between the journalist’s abduction and the discovery of his body. He also mentioned physical meetings. Yet, he also spoke of deleted content he couldn’t access, which leaves a lingering sense of incompleteness.“
During Tuesday’s hearing, Georges Bell Bitjoka clarified that the 18% of data recovered from businessman Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga’s phone is insufficient to either establish his guilt or confirm his innocence. In light of this, the lawyers representing Martinez Zogo’s beneficiaries have requested additional expertise to thoroughly analyze the deleted communications between Justin Danwe and Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga.
This request could potentially illuminate some of the remaining ambiguities surrounding this complex case in Cameroon. The trial has been adjourned, with proceedings set to resume on June 22nd and 23rd.
