Ousmane Sonko breaks silence on government exit, addresses relations with president Faye

Ousmane Sonko, the prominent leader, has finally addressed the public following his departure from the government and the subsequent formation of a new cabinet that notably excludes representatives from his party, PASTEF.

During a press conference, Sonko delivered a series of pointed remarks, directing criticism toward President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. However, he carefully qualified his statements, insisting that the current divergences should not be misconstrued as a personal estrangement between the two political figures.

Reflecting on their working relationship, Sonko expressed regret over what he perceived as a significant breakdown in communication with the head of state.

“The President declined to engage in dialogue with me at a time when he was conversing with other individuals,” Sonko revealed.

Addressing PASTEF’s absence from the recently appointed government, the former Prime Minister underscored the deep-rooted political proximity that had long characterized the two camps.

“Let no one stray; the President should remain on his path, and we on ours,” Sonko emphasized, signaling a clear distinction in their political roles.

Despite the evident political tensions, the PASTEF leader assured that his interactions with Bassirou Diomaye Faye never escalated into direct confrontation.

“We have never exchanged harsh words face-to-face,” he maintained.

In a tone that blended critical assessment with a call to action, Sonko also clarified that his political movement does not consider itself an adversary of the Republic’s President.

“We are not President Diomaye’s opponents. The true adversaries are the rising cost of living, the challenges in transportation, and the daily concerns of the Senegalese people,” he asserted, suggesting that the opposition is attempting to capitalize on the current differences within the executive branch.

These pronouncements emerge amidst a significant governmental reshuffle, fueling ongoing speculation regarding the future trajectory of relations between Ousmane Sonko, PASTEF, and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
