Lyon’s management, under the guidance of coach Paul Fonseca, aimed to ease scheduling pressures by requesting a delay. The club’s potential participation in the Champions League playoffs—spanning matches on August 4/5 and August 11—could have overlapped with Ligue 1 commitments, forcing a tight turnaround between European and domestic fixtures.
This request mirrors similar appeals made by Paris Saint-Germain and RC Strasbourg earlier in the season. Yet, the LFP’s governing body maintained its stance that the integrity of the season’s opening matchday must remain intact. A critical factor in their decision is the full transition to Ligue 1+ broadcasting, which begins this season, adding further emphasis on uninterrupted match scheduling.

In a virtual meeting held Monday evening, the LFP’s board formally rejected Lyon’s proposal. The league’s leadership emphasized that altering the fixture calendar so early would set an undesirable precedent, particularly as clubs adapt to new broadcast and logistical frameworks. As a result, Lyon must now navigate a compressed schedule, potentially juggling European commitments and their Ligue 1 opener in Toulouse.
