Morocco reinforces un peacekeeping commitments in Rabat meeting

Morocco reinforces its dedication to UN peacekeeping efforts

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita welcomed UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Rabat this Monday for a high-level meeting. Lacroix, on his second official visit to Morocco, discussed key priorities with local leadership.

During the meeting, both officials emphasized the critical role and substantial contributions Morocco continues to make to United Nations peacekeeping missions worldwide.

This commitment stems from a long-standing royal vision, maintained consistently since 1960. Morocco currently ranks ninth among the top troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping operations.

As the current chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026 and coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on peacekeeping issues, Morocco enjoys strong international trust in matters of global peace and security.

The visit follows the UN Secretary-General’s launch of major reform initiatives, including the “UN 80” plan to streamline the organization’s secretariat. It also aligns with broader strategic reviews of peacekeeping operations and international peace and security frameworks, aimed at restoring political primacy in conflict resolution.

Morocco’s enduring legacy in global peacekeeping

Morocco’s active participation in peacekeeping dates back to 1960, when it first contributed troops to UN missions. Over the decades, the country has sent peacekeepers to some of the world’s most volatile regions, including Darfur, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.
