Morocco hosts permanent seat of African prosecutors association

In a landmark ceremony held in Rabat on Tuesday, the country witnessed the unveiling of the permanent headquarters of the African Prosecutors Association. The event was led by Hicham Balaoui, Morocco’s top public prosecutor and current Secretary-General of the Association, alongside Renson Ingonga, the Kenyan President of the organisation.

The occasion marked the formal transfer of the Association’s headquarters from Mozambique to the Kingdom of Morocco, formalised through a signed agreement. Attendees highlighted the strategic importance of Morocco’s judiciary, praising its growing reputation under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and the confidence placed in its judicial institutions by peers across Africa.

Among the dignitaries present were Mohamed Abdennabaoui, Deputy President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, and Abdelatif Amrani, Morocco’s General Treasurer, along with senior judicial officials from various African nations.

The meeting served as a platform for the Association’s Executive Committee to approve a comprehensive work agenda, review proposed amendments to its statutes, and discuss annual membership contributions. A key focus remained on strengthening judicial cooperation across the continent.

During his opening address, Hicham Balaoui emphasised the urgent need for enhanced collaboration between African police services and prosecutorial bodies. He underscored the value of sharing expertise and best practices to combat transnational organised crime, corruption, human trafficking, and cybercrime.

Closing remarks celebrated the African Prosecutors Association’s pivotal role in fostering professional ties among its members. Participants recognised its significance as an institutional framework for dialogue, coordination, and collective action in addressing the continent’s evolving justice challenges.

With Rabat now hosting the Association’s permanent seat, Morocco solidifies its position as a central hub for judicial collaboration in Africa. This milestone introduces a new institutional dimension to cooperation among African prosecutors, particularly in response to rising transnational crime.
