Match Nantes-Toulouse abandoned after supporters storm the pitch in final minutes of Ligue 1

The highly anticipated final match of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC was abandoned just 22 minutes into the game at the Stade de la Beaujoire. The decision came after Nantes supporters invaded the pitch, launched flares, and threw objects onto the field, creating an unsafe environment for players and officials.

Game interrupted amid unsafe conditions

The match, which had been goalless (0-0), was halted following the chaotic scenes. Referee Stéphanie Frappart attempted to restore order but was unable to control the situation. Players from both teams were instructed to return to the locker rooms while security personnel struggled to manage the growing unrest.

Vahid Halilhodzic, Nantes’ head coach, was visibly distressed on the sidelines, yelling at the supporters who were advancing toward him. Security personnel had to physically restrain him to prevent further escalation. After several tense minutes, the Nantes ultras were eventually contained and escorted back to their stands by a heavy presence of riot police (CRS).

The stadium was later evacuated after additional flare launches were reported. The decision to definitively abandon the match was made during an emergency meeting involving the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) delegate Olivier Chovaux, the Loire-Atlantique prefect, police representatives, and the match referee.

Minister condemns violent scenes

Following the abandonment, Marina Ferrari, France’s Minister of Sports, issued a strong condemnation of the violence:

« The scenes of violence witnessed during the FC Nantes vs Toulouse FC match are unacceptable and have no place in sport or in our Republic. I firmly condemn these actions and extend my support to the players and the peaceful supporters who came to enjoy the game. The prefect’s decision to definitively abandon the match was necessary — such incidents cannot be tolerated. I commend the rapid response of stewards and law enforcement. Every stakeholder must take responsibility to identify those responsible for these acts of violence, who will face severe consequences.»

Nantes set for relegation to Ligue 2

FC Nantes, currently in 17th place, will face Ligue 2 next season. The club’s final match ended in chaos, overshadowing what was meant to be a symbolic end to the campaign for the players and staff. The Toulouse side, unaffected by the turmoil, will reflect on a season that did not go as planned, though their fate in European competitions remains unchanged.

Safety concerns prompt definitive halt

Frappart, speaking nearly 40 minutes after the initial stoppage, confirmed the decision to abandon the game indefinitely for safety reasons. The announcement was met with cheers from the Nantes ultras in the stands. The prefect’s intervention underscored the seriousness of the situation, with authorities emphasizing zero tolerance for such behavior in French football.
