Maroc-Philippines trade boost: 50% rise in bilateral exchanges
The Philippine ambassador to Rabat, Leslie Baja, highlighted a remarkable surge in bilateral trade between the two nations in recent years. While bilateral exchanges have climbed by approximately 50%, both sides acknowledge that the current volume still falls short of their full potential.

The diplomatic ties between Morocco and the Philippines, spanning five decades, have laid a strong foundation for future collaboration, according to Philippine Ambassador to Morocco, Leslie Baja. Speaking about the milestone anniversary celebrated last year, he emphasized the depth of these relations built on high-level exchanges, strategic agreements, and strong people-to-people connections.
In an exclusive discussion, the ambassador pointed out that bilateral trade has seen a substantial increase, with commerce between the two countries rising by around 50% in recent years. Despite this progress, he noted that trade volumes remain below what both nations had anticipated.
Highlighting the complementary strengths of the two countries, Baja underscored Morocco’s role as a gateway to Africa and Europe and the Philippines’ position as an active member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He identified significant opportunities in agro-industry, aerospace, electronics, and textiles, while also noting that the Philippines remains a key importer of moroccan phosphate.
Discussing broader regional cooperation, the ambassador praised the sectoral partnership agreement signed between Morocco and ASEAN in 2023, calling it a catalyst for expanded collaboration at both bilateral and regional levels.
Regarding the Atlantic Initiative aimed at granting Sahel states access to the Atlantic Ocean, Baja stressed its potential to enhance African regional integration, drawing parallels with ASEAN’s successful model. He argued that deeper African integration could lead to greater economic stability, political resilience, and cultural vibrancy across the continent.
The ambassador reiterated the Philippines’ support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Southern Provinces, recalling that Manila had endorsed the initiative during a 2022 visit by the Philippine foreign minister, describing it as a ‘solid foundation’ for resolving the dispute. He pointed to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 as a turning point, expressing optimism about the political process moving forward.
Baja also mentioned the upcoming launch of a book chronicling the history of Morocco-Philippines relations, which aims to showcase five decades of cooperation and celebrate the contributions of both nations in fostering mutual understanding. The volume, he explained, goes beyond historical facts to highlight the human connections that have strengthened ties between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of the Philippines.
