Mali’s junta offers substantial bounties for top terror leaders

Iyad Ag Ghaly, a former Tuareg rebel and seasoned Malian diplomat, currently spearheads the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an organization established in 2017.

He stands as the most sought-after figure across the Sahel region, subject to United Nations sanctions, designated a “terrorist” by the United States, and facing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The nation of Mali grapples with a grave security predicament following unprecedented attacks on April 25 and 26. These assaults were carried out by JNIM jihadists, acting in concert with the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebellion.

These coordinated and exceptionally large-scale offensives targeted vital strategic positions held by the ruling junta across various regions of Mali, including the capital, Bamako. Tragically, these attacks claimed the life of Sadio Camara, 47, Mali’s Defense Minister and a key figure within the junta, who perished in a suicide bombing.

In a public address broadcast on national television on Thursday, the Malian government announced rewards for the capture of six additional key figures. Among them are Amadou Kouffa, another senior JNIM leader, for whom a bounty of 2.2 million euros is offered, alongside two prominent FLA commanders, Alghabass Ag Intalla and Bilal Ag Cherif.

A statement from the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection affirmed its commitment to counter-terrorism and national security. It declared a financial incentive for any individual providing credible, relevant, and actionable intelligence that leads to the apprehension or neutralization of the aforementioned individuals.

The communique further elaborated that these persons are actively pursued by competent authorities due to their alleged involvement in orchestrating, planning, and executing terrorist acts that have endangered the safety of citizens and their property throughout the national territory.

Since 2012, Mali has been embroiled in a profound security crisis, exacerbated by the ongoing violence perpetrated by JNIM, the Islamic State (EI) group, and various communal criminal organizations.
