Mali’s government places bounties on key JNIM and FLA leaders amidst escalating crisis

Iyad Ag Ghaly, a former Tuareg rebel and one-time Malian diplomat, currently spearheads the JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims), an organization he founded in 2017. He stands as the most sought-after individual across the Sahel region.

Ag Ghaly faces international sanctions from the United Nations, is designated a “terrorist” by the United States, and is the subject of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Mali is grappling with a severe security crisis following large-scale attacks on April 25 and 26. These assaults were orchestrated by JNIM jihadists, acting in concert with the Tuareg-dominated Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA) rebellion.

These unprecedented and coordinated attacks targeted critical strategic positions held by the ruling junta in Bamako across several regions of the country. Tragically, the attacks claimed the life of Sadio Camara, Mali’s 47-year-old Defense Minister and a pivotal figure within the junta, who was killed in a suicide bombing.

In a communiqué broadcast on national television on Thursday, the Malian government declared substantial bounties for six additional high-ranking figures. Among them are another prominent JNIM leader, Amadou Kouffa, with a reward of 2.2 million euros, alongside two key FLA commanders, Alghabass Ag Intalla and Bilal Ag Cherif. This development in Mali current affairs highlights the government’s resolve.

The communiqué stated, “The Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, as part of its commitment to counter-terrorism and safeguarding national security, offers a financial reward to anyone providing reliable, relevant, and actionable intelligence leading to the arrest or neutralization of the aforementioned individuals.”

It further elaborated, “These individuals are actively pursued by relevant authorities for their alleged involvement in the planning, organization, and execution of terrorist acts that have jeopardized the safety of citizens and their property throughout the national territory.”

Since 2012, Mali has endured a profound security crisis, exacerbated by the persistent violence from JNIM, the Islamic State (EI), and various communal criminal groups. This ongoing struggle remains a central focus of Bamako news and Mali politics english discussions.
