The International Rescue Committee (IRC) issues a stark warning regarding a severe escalation of the humanitarian crisis in Mali, as widespread insecurity paralyzes transport routes and leaves millions already vulnerable in deeper distress.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is raising the alarm over a significant surge in armed violence across Mali since the end of April. According to the humanitarian organization, a wave of coordinated attacks and growing instability on crucial road networks is severely disrupting the movement of both people and essential goods, particularly fuel and food supplies destined for the capital, Bamako.
This worsening security climate intensifies the already dire living conditions for populations grappling with a persistent humanitarian crisis. Access to fundamental services is becoming increasingly challenging, while the risks faced by vulnerable families continue to escalate.
“a growing climate of fear and uncertainty”
Matias Meier, the IRC’s operations director in Mali, reports a marked deterioration in the situation over recent weeks.
He explains, “Over the past two weeks, our teams have observed a growing climate of fear and uncertainty among families who have already been enduring a profound crisis for years.”
Meier emphasizes that the prevailing insecurity and disruptions to transportation now impede access to critical healthcare, safe drinking water, and food supplies across several regions of the country. Despite this challenging environment, he notes the “remarkable resilience” demonstrated by local communities and humanitarian workers.
The IRC confirms its ongoing presence on the ground, continuing its efforts alongside local partners and authorities to consistently adapt its humanitarian response to meet the evolving needs of the population.
a largely overlooked humanitarian emergency
Mali currently represents one of the world’s most underreported humanitarian crises. Projections indicate that 5.1 million people will require humanitarian assistance in 2026, a figure that includes over 415,000 internally displaced individuals.
Throughout the nation, communities contend with a confluence of worsening factors: armed conflicts, climatic shocks, food insecurity, and restricted access to basic services. Women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities are among the most exposed, frequently encountering heightened protection risks and diminished access to medical care, potable water, and sustainable livelihoods.
adaptive interventions amidst insecurity
In response to the rapidly changing circumstances, the IRC conducts continuous assessments to ensure its programs can proceed safely. Teams operating in affected areas remain at the forefront of humanitarian operations, implementing enhanced security protocols when deemed necessary.
The organization is also developing flexible and remote service delivery mechanisms to guarantee the continuity of life-saving services in areas most exposed to insecurity.
over a decade of humanitarian commitment
Active in Mali since 2012, the International Rescue Committee provides support to communities impacted by conflict and forced displacement, particularly in regions where essential services are either non-existent or severely disrupted.
The organization implements programs across several vital sectors, including health, nutrition, protection, access to water and sanitation, and economic recovery initiatives. Despite significant access challenges, its dedicated teams persist in their work alongside local communities in some of the country’s most isolated regions.
Established in 1933, the IRC now operates in more than 50 countries and 28 U.S. cities, committed to assisting populations affected by humanitarian crises in rebuilding their lives and achieving dignified living conditions.
