Malian opposition figure’s son reported missing after father’s abduction

This disappearance tragically follows the “abduction” of his father, Mountaga Tall, earlier in the month. The legal team is now urgently demanding their immediate release.
Mountaga Tall was reportedly seized on May 2 by “hooded men,” according to his family. This incident took place in Mali, a Sahelian nation currently governed by a military junta that has progressively curtailed civil liberties, impacting Mali politics and current affairs.
A former key member of the M5 movement, Mountaga Tall played a pivotal role in the protests that ultimately led to the downfall of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK)’s administration in 2020. While initially aligned with the military leaders who seized power in 2020, he subsequently distanced himself, becoming a vocal critic of the junta’s policies.
Disappearance of Mountaga Tall’s son deepens concern
In a statement dated Tuesday and released to the public on Wednesday, the family’s lawyers expressed their “dismay” upon learning of Cheick Mamadou Tall’s disappearance on Saturday, May 16, 2026, after he received a phone call. This adds a new layer of concern to West Africa Mali news.
The collective of lawyers stated their profound concern regarding “this unlawful act which occurs after the abduction” of Mountaga Tall. The communiqué, signed by four attorneys, implores “the competent administrative and judicial authorities to exert every effort to ensure both individuals regain their freedom” and to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding their disappearances.
Mountaga Tall’s abduction occurred mere days after devastating attacks on April 25. These deadly assaults, carried out by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) alongside rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), targeted strategic positions held by the military regime, dominating Bamako news at the time.
