Mali trial of bah n’Daw allies: justice delayed, innocence claimed

Six associates of Mali’s former transitional leader face court proceedings

Nearly six years since the onset of Mali’s transitional period, a high-profile legal case is unfolding in Bamako. Six individuals, described as close allies of former interim President Bah N’Daw, have appeared before the criminal chambers of the Bamako Court of Appeal amid charges of conspiracy and attempts to destabilize state institutions.

Who stands accused?

The defendants include a mix of military personnel and civilians, all linked to Bah N’Daw’s administration. Among them are Colonel Kassoum Goïta, former head of Mali’s State Security Directorate, and Kalilou Doumbia, who served as Secretary-General of the Presidency during the initial phase of the transition. The group also comprises an army warrant officer, a police commissioner, a businessman, and a traditional spiritual advisor.

Colonel Kassoum Goïta—who shares no familial ties with the current transitional head, General Assimi Goïta—led intelligence operations when the accusations first surfaced. Kalilou Doumbia, meanwhile, held a key administrative role during the critical period between August 2020 and May 2021.

Legal battles and prolonged detention

The accused have been held in custody since 2021, despite an earlier judicial ruling in June 2022 that cleared Kalilou Doumbia and former Kayes police commissioner Moustapha Diakité of wrongdoing. That decision, however, did not lead to their release. In January 2023, the appeals court ordered their case to proceed to criminal trial, and since then, multiple requests for provisional release have been denied.

Defense attorneys argue that this trial is politically motivated, suggesting their clients are being targeted due to their association with Bah N’Daw, who was forcibly removed from power during the May 2021 coup. The lawyers maintain that the allegations lack substance and that their clients remain steadfast in denying all charges.

Ongoing legal uncertainties

In a separate development, defense counsels filed a complaint in December 2021 against General Modibo Koné, current Director of State Security, alleging misconduct during the arrests. To date, no judicial follow-up has been recorded regarding this complaint.

The six defendants are expected to appear in court to address the accusations against them, which they continue to reject. Their legal team expresses hope that the proceedings will finally clarify the facts and restore their clients’ reputations.
