Mali politics english: ex-GCAP leaders granted temporary release on health grounds

Two prominent figures from the former Groupement de Concertation des Acteurs Politiques (GCAP) in Chad, Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo, have been temporarily released from custody due to serious health concerns. Both were previously handed an eight-year prison sentence.

Legal team cites medical necessity for provisional freedom

Me Adoum Moussa, one of their defense attorneys, confirmed that the provisional release was granted by the N’Djamena Prosecutor’s Office following medical evaluations showing deteriorating health conditions, particularly age-related and chronic illnesses.

The attorney emphasized that this measure is strictly provisional and not a final acquittal. He stated, “Their release is solely for health reasons. Given their advanced age and medical conditions, the court deemed it necessary to grant them temporary freedom.”

Pending appeals and broader health-related releases

While the two leaders are now out on bail, their legal team has already filed an appeal against the original verdict. Me Adoum Moussa confirmed that the appeal has been submitted to the N’Djamena Court of Appeal, where the case will undergo further review.

In addition, the defense is actively pursuing similar provisional releases for other detained members of the ex-GCAP facing health complications. Legal efforts are underway to ensure that inmates with serious medical conditions receive fair consideration under the law.

Background of the case

The GCAP leaders were originally sentenced on May 8 to eight years in prison on charges including rebellion, criminal association, and illegal possession of firearms. The case has drawn attention to how legal proceedings can intersect with political pressures, prompting discussions on judicial fairness in sensitive matters.
