The concluding round of Ligue 1 was significantly disrupted by pitch invasions across two fixtures. In Nantes, the encounter against Toulouse was definitively abandoned following an intrusion by supporters.
Serious disturbances marred the final day of the Ligue 1 season. Two of the ten scheduled matches on Sunday evening were interrupted by field invasions in Nice and Nantes.
In Nice, ultras breached security barriers at the conclusion of their match against Metz. Riot police were deployed to push them back. However, the situation escalated considerably in Nantes.
At the Stade de la Beaujoire, FC Nantes, already relegated to Ligue 2, could not even complete their fixture against Toulouse. In the 22nd minute, the game descended into chaos as dozens of Nantes supporters, many of them masked, stormed the pitch, compelling players to retreat to the changing rooms.
“It’s a disgrace”
Forty minutes later, the match was officially abandoned. This outcome was particularly heartbreaking for Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodžić, who had intended this match to be his final appearance on the sidelines of a professional career.
“It’s a disgrace. I would have liked to approach the supporters and tell them to stop. If they are frustrated, I can perfectly understand that, but not this. I gave everything I could as a coach, as a man. Unfortunately, the reality is terrible,” he expressed.
While the Ligue de football professionnel has yet to issue a public statement, the governing body has initiated an official inquiry into the matter. FC Nantes faces severe repercussions. In addition to a temporary closure of sections of its stands, the club could be hit with a point deduction for the upcoming Ligue 2 season.
This mirrors the fate of Saint-Étienne four years prior, which received a six-point penalty before the start of their championship following similar incidents.
