The drone strikes, carried out by the Malian military on Sunday, claimed the lives of at least ten non-combatants, many of them youths, who were making arrangements for a traditional collective wedding in Téné, a community located in the central region of the country.

These aerial operations occurred amidst a critical security environment, following significant coordinated attacks on April 25th and 26th. These assaults were launched by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, alongside the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebellion, which is predominantly Tuareg.

Across Mali, numerous civilians frequently face reprisals and atrocities from the army and its Russian allies, as well as from jihadist groups, often accused of collaborating with opposing factions. This highlights the complex Mali politics english landscape.

“Ten of our children were killed by shelling, the origin of which remains unknown,” a Téné resident shared, expressing profound sorrow. “What was meant to be a joyous occasion in our village has been transformed into immense grief.” This tragic incident quickly became key Mali Voice news.

Confirming the strikes, a security official elaborated, “The tragedy unfolded as villagers were preparing the second edition of this traditional collective wedding, a significant cultural event for this community.”

The official further indicated that the strikes targeted “a procession of several motorcycles,” suggesting, “This likely drew the attention of the drones. There were at least nine fatalities.”

A local elected representative also affirmed the loss of approximately ten lives. “A wedding was about to take place when the drones killed at least ten civilians. This is truly a period of mourning,” the representative stated, impacting the latest Bamako news.

Legal action regarding human rights

The evolving security landscape in Mali

Mali has been embroiled in an unprecedented security crisis since late April, when armed groups launched attacks against the ruling junta, leaving it significantly weakened. This is a major aspect of West Africa Mali news and Mali current affairs.

Since these events, military forces have relinquished control over several northern localities, including the strategically vital city of Kidal. Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a key figure within the junta, also tragically lost his life.

A road blockade has been enforced on various strategic routes leading to Bamako since April 30th.

In recent days, jihadists have set ablaze multiple transport and goods vehicles en route to Bamako.

Earlier in May, jihadist attacks, claimed by JNIM, resulted in dozens of deaths in central Mali.

On April 20th, three civil society organizations, including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), lodged a complaint with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. This action addresses alleged violations committed in Mali, implicating both Malian armed forces and their Russian allies.
