Olympique Lyonnais (OL) had sought to reschedule their initial Ligue 1 fixture, but this appeal was contingent upon their advancement to the UEFA Champions League play-off round. To secure a spot in the prestigious Champions League group stage, the Lyon squad must first navigate the third preliminary round, with matches slated for August 4th or 5th (first leg) and August 11th or 12th (return leg). Should they succeed, they would then proceed to the play-offs, the final hurdle before the Champions League proper, featuring an away leg on August 18th or 19th and the decisive home leg on August 25th or 26th.
A significant scheduling conflict emerges because the opening weekend of Ligue 1 is set for August 22nd. This date falls directly between the two critical Champions League play-off encounters. It was precisely to circumvent this demanding situation that OL had formally requested a deferral of their away game against Toulouse. The club contended that a less congested fixture list would significantly enhance their prospects of clinching a coveted place in the Champions League.
Furthermore, representatives from the Lyon club had underscored the broader advantages for French football if Olympique Lyonnais were to participate in Europe’s premier club competition.
However, during its meeting on Monday, the French Professional Football League (LFP) formally rejected OL’s plea. The governing body’s decision was primarily based on the principle that commencing the Ligue 1 season with a postponed fixture was undesirable, particularly as the entire championship is poised for broadcast on its newly launched platform.
Consequently, barring any unforeseen alterations to the calendar, Olympique Lyonnais will face a formidable challenge if they reach the Champions League play-offs. Their schedule would demand playing a European match, followed by an away Ligue 1 fixture in Toulouse, and then the return leg of their European play-off, all within the demanding span of a single week.
