Khalifa Sall launches new political vision for Senegal

Taxawu Sénégal has officially transitioned from a political platform to a structured party during its constitutive congress held in Dakar on Sunday, May 10. The event, centered on the theme «From platform to political party: Rethinking the social contract for a sovereign, just, united and prosperous Senegal», brought together activists, leaders and supporters to define a new strategic direction for the movement.

Khalifa Sall elected leader amid calls for systemic change

At the close of the congress, Khalifa Ababacar Sall was unanimously acclaimed as the new leader of Taxawu Sénégal. His acceptance speech combined sharp critique with a forward-looking program, outlining deep concerns about the country’s trajectory. « Across our cities, towns, neighborhoods and villages, a single reality confronts us: Senegalese women and men share a growing conviction that promises of social justice, prosperity and transparency remain unfulfilled, » he stated.

Diagnosing a nation in crisis

The new party’s leader painted a picture of a Senegal facing multiple social crises:

  • Teachers seeking fair recognition and better working conditions
  • Students struggling with deteriorating educational environments
  • Workers demanding improved labor standards and job security
  • Farmers grappling with economic instability and declining productivity
  • Fishermen facing the depletion of marine resources
  • Women confronting rising economic vulnerability
  • Youth trapped in mass unemployment and a resurgence of clandestine migration

« When a nation’s youth falters, the entire country trembles, » warned Sall. « A generation without direction signals a future without momentum. »

A renewed social contract for Senegal

Taxawu Sénégal proposes a comprehensive political alternative built on a reframed social contract. Sall emphasized the need for an impartial, efficient and exemplary state, with equitable access to education, healthcare, employment and social protection. Key pillars include:

  • Strengthened decentralization through autonomous, responsible local governments with transparent budgets and citizen participation
  • An independent judiciary free from political interference or selective justice
  • Guaranteed freedoms of expression, press and political pluralism

Sovereignty, solidarity and economic justice

Sall articulated a vision for Senegalese diplomacy rooted in peace, multilateralism, African solidarity and economic sovereignty, particularly in a global context marked by geopolitical tensions and economic instability. He reaffirmed Taxawu Sénégal’s socialist foundations, declaring, « We are socialists. We cannot accept a system where inequality perpetuates across generations. »

The party’s ideological framework rests on a triptych of Humanity, Water and Land, aiming to build an economy that is both productive and distributive—one that generates wealth while ensuring fair sharing of its benefits.

Uniting the left for national renewal

In a powerful appeal to Senegal’s socialist movements, Sall urged unity as the path to overcoming the country’s challenges. « Senegal needs a united opposition. Unity is our strength—and it will be our victory, » he declared, concluding to thunderous applause from the delegates.
